Information is doubling every 18months yet our school system is based on the old Carnegie Unit where seat time = proficiency, 6.5 hours, and 180 days of school. The school calendar is based on the harvest calendar and beaurocracy has been our model system for over 100 years.
As I watch Did You Know? on YouTube, it seems like the only thing changing is EVERYTHING except education. The reseach available is excellent and presents a model for education as to how children learn, the education system will need to match these needs otherwise students in America will have a difficult time in the ever changing technological and globalized world.

The latest buzzword is "STW" for seat time waiver. It's about time!
ReplyDeleteOn his blog, Ira Socol shared a very informative post about the history of the Carnegie Unit: http://speedchange.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteThanks Jim,
ReplyDeleteI love to receive additional resources such as links to explore.
Replying to a comment you sent about kids not being without technology made me think of some college acquaintances. Besides carrying around cell phones, I knew a TON of boys who played online video games (such as World of Warcraft) and they became addicted to that game! They can play with people all over the world or just their friends. My little brother is still in high school and he's obsessed with the videogame Call of Duty (which I don't like), but it's social time for him. They're able to connect the game online and then he can talk with his friends over head phones.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, when it's summer, I don't so much mind the Carnegie unit... : )
I have never heard of the Carnegie Unit, but will be Googling it shortly! LOL
ReplyDeleteI agree that everything is changing but education! The gap between education and reality for students is widening! Elaine
